PTC in secondary metabolites production

Plant tissue culture (PTC)  can be called as  master technique of biotechnology and categorized under plant biotechnology. There are multifarious applications of PTC but production of valuable secondary metabolites at the commercial level  is one of them. Plant synthesizes numbers of secondary metabolites(SM). It is well known that  based on demand of secondary metabolites of interest; it cannot be fulfilled by plants naturally. PTC technique is amenable to production of SM at large scale under specified conditions. There are several reasons for using PTC for SM production rather than convention method(in vivo) using whole plant.   • SM production is possible regardless of weather or climate change (variant climate change) occur because of under the specified lab setup. 

  • The PTC can reduce the cost of medicinal valued  secondary metabolites. 

  • Production can be more reliable, simpler, and amenable to automation. 

  • Undesirable  compound(s)  that occur in the whole plant (in vivo)  can be avoided and separated  in cell cultures.

  • Cell and tissue  cultures amenable to  radiolabeled, such that the accumulated secondary metabolites, when provided as feed to model organisms  or experimental organisms can be traced metabolically.
