AWSAR stands for Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research and this program is started by DST(Department of Science and Technology), GOI. PhD and PDF scholar to be awarded by AWSAR. Under this initiative, PhD and post-doctoral scholars in science and technology streams would be encouraged to write at least one popular science story during the tenancy of their scholarship, and to participate in a national competition. Any subject under Science and Technology (S&T) are covered under AWSAR Program.

Entries can be submitted from from 15 August 2019 till 15 October 2019

Under the initiative of Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research (AWSAR), workshops will be organized at different locations in the country for handholding and developing requisite skills to researchers. The workshops will be conducted by experts who will pool their ideas to suggest tips for good writing and good popular science writing. The tentative theme will cover:

  • Learn what makes writing good.

  • Emphasise on effective way of writing in the clearest way possible, use of jargon which explain its meaning clearly.

  • Use of appropriate words, language, sentences clinches for particular effects

  • Tips for original writing

  • Tips for getting a hook to grab the attention of the reader.

  • Basic rules of style, the flow of words and sentences, Grammar and punctuation

Award Categories:

For PhD Scholars  

For Post Doctoral Fellows(PDF) 

100 selected entries:  10,000 (each)

20 selected entries:  10,000 (each)

1st Prize:  1,00,000 (one)

One Outstanding story:  1,00,000

2nd Prize:  50,000 (one)


3rd Prize:  25,000 (one)


 These awards will be bestowed on 28 February at National Science Day event every year. All the awardees will be given an opportunity to attend Science Film Training Workshop organized by Vigyan Prasar.

Selection Criteria:

A panel consisting of eminent scientists and science communicators, constituted by DST would evaluate the entries.

Who can apply:

Indian citizen pursuing PhD or PDF in any stream of Science and Technology (S&T), within the tenancy period of her/his research,

*NO age limit to apply for AWSAR to qualify for the award.
